How to choose a forex liquidity provider

A liquidity provider supplies the prices your clients trade on and, for the flow you pass on, takes the other side. Brokers choose between banks, prime of prime providers and multi-provider venues by access, requirements, pricing and how well the LP connects to their platforms. Most end up with more than one.

The options

The three kinds of liquidity provider

General patterns, not rules. Terms vary a lot between providers, so check each one.

  • Who they serveTier 1 bank or prime broker:Large brokers, banks and fundsPrime of prime:Small and mid-sized brokers and prop firmsMulti-provider venue:Brokers who want many sources through one connection
  • RequirementsTier 1 bank or prime broker:Significant capital, credit lines and a prime relationshipPrime of prime:Lower; the provider extends its own prime access to youMulti-provider venue:Depends on the venue and how it is accessed
  • PricingTier 1 bank or prime broker:Very tight at size, from the bank’s own bookPrime of prime:Aggregated from the provider’s banks and venues, plus their marginMulti-provider venue:Competing quotes from several providers
  • InstrumentsTier 1 bank or prime broker:Mainly FX, sometimes metalsPrime of prime:FX, metals, indices, energies, often crypto CFDsMulti-provider venue:Varies by venue
  • OnboardingTier 1 bank or prime broker:Long, with full credit reviewPrime of prime:Weeks, with KYC and a depositMulti-provider venue:Varies by venue

New and mid-sized brokers usually start with a prime of prime provider, because tier 1 access needs capital and credit that few small firms have. Where your flow goes after that depends on your execution model, covered in A-book vs B-book vs hybrid.

Due diligence

What to check before you sign

Six questions that separate LPs better than a price list does.

Spreads when it matters

Ask for spreads and depth at your busiest hours, at rollover and around news, not monthly averages. Better still, run their feed on demo for a week.

Fill quality

For flow you pass on: fill rates, rejects, last look and slippage on both sides. Ask how they report it and how often.

Instruments and hours

Every symbol you plan to offer, with the trading hours and digits you need, including crypto at weekends if that matters to you.

Costs and minimums

Commission per million, minimum monthly volume or fees, deposit and margin terms, and what happens if you fall short.

Counterparty and regulation

Who you actually face, where they are regulated, and how your margin is held if something goes wrong.

Support in your hours

Someone who answers during your trading day, and clear notice before session resets or symbol changes.

Connectivity

How LPs connect to your platforms

The technical side is similar across LPs. Agree these points before the first logon.

  1. 01

    FIX 4.4 sessions

Most LPs stream prices over FIX 4.4, often with separate sessions for market data and for trading.

  2. 02

    Snapshots or increments

Confirm which market data messages they send and that your bridge or gateway reads them.

  3. 03

    Symbol names

Every LP names symbols its own way. Get their list early and map it to yours once.

  4. 04

    Fixed IP

They will allow-list the IP you connect from, so connect from a server with a fixed public IP.

  5. 05

    A test session first

A UAT environment lets you prove logon, symbols and prices before you touch live.

  6. 06

    Resets and maintenance

Know their weekly sequence reset and maintenance windows, so planned gaps do not look like outages.

The full setup is in how to connect a liquidity provider to MT5, and the protocol itself in FIX API for brokers.

Redundancy

Why most brokers use two or more LPs

One LP is a single point of failure for every price your clients see.

A backup when a feed stops

If your main LP goes quiet, a second one keeps prices flowing instead of freezing every chart.

Better prices

Taking the best bid and ask across LPs per symbol can tighten what your clients see.

A live comparison

Two feeds side by side show you which LP prices better, and when, before you renegotiate.

Combining LPs has traps of its own, from crossed quotes to stale feeds. Liquidity aggregation explains the methods and what to watch for.

In XiroLink

Add a second LP without touching MT5

XiroLink connects any LP over FIX 4.4 or TCP and maps its symbols to one universal list, so adding a provider never means remapping your platforms. Choose per symbol between a single LP, the best price across LPs or priority with failover, follow every price from LP to platform, and get an alert the moment a feed goes stale.

Liquidity provider questions

What is a forex liquidity provider?

A bank, prime broker or specialist firm that supplies the bid and ask prices a broker shows its clients and, for trades the broker passes on, takes the other side.

What is prime of prime liquidity?

A provider with prime brokerage relationships at large banks that extends that access to smaller brokers, with lower requirements, and usually aggregates several banks and venues into one feed.

How many liquidity providers should a broker have?

Most brokers want at least two: one main LP and one backup, so prices keep flowing if a feed stops. More LPs can tighten spreads through best-price aggregation, but each adds onboarding and monitoring work.

Do B-book brokers need a liquidity provider?

Yes. Even trades kept in house need reliable market prices, and most B-book brokers still hedge part of their exposure with an LP.

Can I connect several LPs to one MT5 server?

Yes, through a liquidity bridge, which combines the LPs per symbol and feeds MT5 one price. An LP’s own gateway usually connects only that LP.
