Liquidity bridge vs MT5 gateway

An MT5 gateway is a plug-in that connects MetaTrader 5 to one outside system through MetaQuotes’ Gateway API. A liquidity bridge runs on its own server and connects many LPs to many platforms. Plenty of brokers use both: the bridge does the pricing work, and a gateway or datafeed hands the result to MT5.

The basics

What an MT5 gateway is

MetaTrader 5 has an official way to plug in outside systems, and it comes in two kinds.

Datafeeds

Bring quotes into MT5. They run under the MT5 History Server, which starts and stops them, and are set up in MT5 Administrator with an address, login and the symbols to receive.

Gateways

Can also send trades from MT5 to an outside venue for execution and bring the fills back. LPs and exchanges often supply one for their own liquidity.

Both are built on the same Gateway API, and both connect one MT5 installation to one outside system. That is their strength, since there is little in between, and their limit: the moment you have a second LP or a second platform, something has to sit in the middle. That something is a liquidity bridge.

Keep it simple

When a gateway is enough

If all three of these are true, a gateway from your LP may be all you need for now.

One server, one LP

You run a single MT5 server and take all your prices from one liquidity provider that supplies its own gateway.

Prices as they come

You are happy with the LP’s symbol names and use MT5 groups for every spread you need.

Nothing else to feed

No MT4 server, FIX clients, web terminal or second brand needs the same prices.

Time for a bridge

When you need a bridge

Any one of these is usually the reason brokers add a bridge in front of MT5.

More than one LP

You want a backup when a feed stops, or the best bid and ask across providers.

More than one platform

MT4 and MT5 side by side, a web terminal, or clients who want prices over FIX.

Your own pricing layer

Spreads per platform, one-click widening for news, and limits that never let a quote cross.

Symbols your way

LP names like EUR/USD mapped once to EURUSD.r or whatever each platform expects.

One place to watch

Alerts when a feed goes quiet, and a view of every LP and platform connection.

Several brands

One LP connection shared across entities, each with its own spreads.

In XiroLink

A bridge that speaks MT5’s own language

XiroLink is the bridge, and its MetaTrader 5 datafeed is built on the Gateway API. It runs inside your History Server and is set up in MT5 Administrator like any other datafeed, so MT5 receives finished prices: combined from your LPs, mapped to your names and marked up per server.

XiroLink handles prices, not orders. Trades stay with your MT5 server and the execution gateway you already use.

Gateway and bridge questions

What is an MT5 gateway?

A module built on MetaQuotes' Gateway API that connects MetaTrader 5 to an outside system, such as a liquidity provider or exchange. Datafeeds bring quotes into MT5; gateways can also pass trades to the outside venue.

Is a gateway cheaper than a bridge?

Often, when it comes free with an LP relationship. But a gateway usually serves one LP and one MT5 server, so the comparison changes as soon as you add a second LP, a second platform or your own pricing rules.

Can I use a bridge and a gateway together?

Yes, and many brokers do. The bridge combines LPs and applies your pricing, and a gateway or datafeed hands the result to MT5. Trades can still go out through the gateway your LP provides.

Does XiroLink replace my MT5 gateway?

For prices, it can: XiroLink streams into MT5 through its own datafeed on the Gateway API. XiroLink does not route orders, so keep the gateway or execution setup you use for trades.

Does MT4 have gateways?

MT4 has no Gateway API. Bridges connect to MT4 through datafeed and server plugins instead, which is how the XiroLink MT4 datafeed works.
