Volatility compares the day's range with its 20 day average. 1 Month range shows where the close sits between the month's low (0%) and high (100%).
Market volatility by group
FX is not moving as one block. EURUSD is down 0.24% on the day and sits at 30% of its 20 day range. USDJPY is down 0.34% and sits at 42%. USDCAD is the softest in range terms, close at 1.39545 and only 2% of its 20 day range after a 2.13% fall over 20 days.
GBPUSD and AUDUSD are the stronger FX names. GBPUSD is up 0.13% on the day and sits at 87% of its 20 day range. AUDUSD is up 0.09% and sits at 80%. For brokers, that split matters. USD pairs are not showing a single directional profile, so book exposure should be reviewed by symbol, not just by broad USD view.
Metals are much more volatile than FX. XAUUSD has a 3.24% day range and is trading at 9% of its 20 day range. Its range is 2.23 times the 20 day average. XAGUSD is more stretched, with a 6.09% day range, 5% of its 20 day range and 1.78 times its 20 day average range.
FX and metals positioning
EURUSD range is 1.39 times its 20 day average, and USDCHF is 1.34 times. Those are the main FX pairs where spread settings and rejection monitoring deserve extra attention. GBPUSD, at 0.97, is close to its 20 day average, while AUDUSD at 0.74 and USDCAD at 0.56 are quieter.
The metals picture is different. XAUUSD closed at 3922.23 after trading between 4018.54 and 3891.34. XAGUSD closed at 49.6162 after trading between 52.0622 and 49.0422. Both are near the lower edge of their 20 day ranges. Brokers should expect more sensitivity around stop clusters, margin usage and widening top of book conditions where liquidity depends on the connected LPs.
Crypto remains near range lows
BTCUSD is down 0.68% on the day, 3.48% over 5 days and 6.8% over 20 days. It sits at 11% of its 20 day range. ETHUSD is down 0.39% on the day and 10.55% over 20 days, at 13% of its 20 day range.
SOLUSD shows the widest crypto day range at 6.82%, with range at 1.42 times the 20 day average. XRPUSD also has a wide 6.22% day range and is up 0.92% on the day, despite being down 11.07% over 20 days. That mix can create fast intraday PnL swings even when the broader trend remains weak.
Broker desk actions
Risk, spreads and monitoring
Review symbols where range is above normal, especially XAUUSD, XAGUSD, SOLUSD, EURUSD and USDCHF. For metals and crypto, check whether dynamic markups, spread limits and maximum exposure settings still match today’s realised ranges. Spread and markup controls are useful when volatility changes faster than the standard dealing schedule.
Risk managers should also watch lower range positioning. Instruments close to their 20 day lows can attract clustered stops and fast hedging activity. Use coverage and house book views to separate client flow from net broker exposure.
For operations teams, stale price alerts, LP health checks and symbol level monitoring matter more on days like this. Monitoring and alerts should be checked on the most volatile symbols, not only on major FX. XiroLink can support this workflow through LP aggregation, markups, Centroid compatible FIX, market data and monitoring, depending on the broker setup.
